We used blue as it was the birthday boys favourite colour and had over 40 LED up-lights to create the effect you see below.  For the trees, we not only lit them from the front, but also back-lit it to help eliminate shadows and create more of a full look.

On March 29th, I was blessed with being awarded the 2012 Readers Choice Award as Canada’s Favourite DJ at the Canadian Special Event Expo held in Toronto.

Thank you to all my friends in the Canadian Special Event Industry for voting for me.  It was such an honour to receive this award and I am forever grateful.

I’m honoured to have been invited to serve as Master of Ceremonies for the 2012 Canadian Special Event Expo held in Toronto from March 28 – 30th.

This conference features some of the most influential people in events from across North American including celebrity wedding planner Marcy Blum, TV personality Jane Dayus-Hinch and celebrity event designer David Beahm among many other great speakers.

I once had a couple who was concerned that nobody would dance at their wedding.  They were very shy and so were many of their friends and family.  The bride told me point blank that she didn’t expect anyone to get up and dance, and not to be alarmed if this happened.

So, at the wedding, when I was able to get all her guests up and on the dance-floor she was ecstatic!  At approximately 11:00 pm, she came up to me and told me that she wanted me to play her last dance so that they could finish the evening.  Bewildered, I asked why?  She said “I never expected everyone to have such a great time and I want to end it on a high note”.  So, as per her request, we ended the evening and the couple couldn’t have been happier.

When you attend a concert, does the band not end on a high?  They finish the evening with some of their greatest hits and the audience screams and cheers for an encore.  The band comes  back out and plays a few more tracks, leaving their fans with a sense of satisfaction.  They never keep playing until the seats are empty, they play until the audience is ready for them to finish.

This is the same for weddings and events.  Now, I want to be clear, I WOULD NEVER SUGGEST THAT YOU END THE EVENT EARLY, FOR THE SAKE OF ENDING IT EARLY and most events still end at 1:00 am.  Yet, I would suggest ending the party on a high note so that you end your party with a bang, not a fizzle.  

Gear does not make the man, especially the DJ.  Yet, I do get asked by some clients if they can see photo’s of my set-up, which is a fair question.

The DJ set-up should be clean with all cables hidden.  I use a custom made case to store my turntables and mixer, complete with a black wrap to hide the silver metal portion of the case.  My speaker cables are attached to my stands with black velcro or black plastic ties, to hide them from plain sight.

The look of your event is important, and the DJ set-up should compliment it, not be an eye-sore.
